Naturally the scale and scope is not as grand as when crossing the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, but guides specifically point out to tourists (old Tbilisi residents already know it by heart) that a new Tbilisi lies beyond that bridge. If in older times there were gardens, vineyards, Germans’ district here, during the last hundred year Tamar Mepe Avenue and its adjacent streets represent the face of industrial and post-Soviet Tbilisi – wide avenues, buildings with strict and proud appearance that are now looking quite old.
However, there’s one building in that new Tbilisi, at the end of the bridge, which looks like a structure from Tbilisi of the future. At first, one can even miss it, because it’s obscured by trees, then you are wondering how you could not notice that six-storied building with its original architecture. Maybe it’s because of the trees or maybe it was the architect’s design all along, but the fact is Grove Design Hotel is here and it’s an impressive but tasteful sign of modern innovations and technological achievements.
English word “grove” means a group of trees and a tree as an essential part of nature and as a valuable and natural material is the main basis of this structure – because of the concept and original idea, one of the trees that stood in the area where the future building was to be erected was not cut down, rather it became a part of the structure and now it follows the glassy wall along its whole vertical as a strong symbol of nature, oldness and futurism.
